Civics Learning Project will hold the We the People Constitution Team competition events virtually for 2022, as well as the Mock Trial competition events for Multnomah County* and for the statewide tournament.
This was a difficult decision. Like many of you, we are tremendously disappointed not to be able to enjoy an in-person experience for these events. However, after gathering input from teachers, coaches, volunteers, potential competition venues, and others, it is clear that this is our best option.
As you know, these events involve hundreds of students, teachers, and volunteer judges, coaches, and facilitators. The health and safety of each of these participant groups, as well as their families and supporters, is of the utmost importance, and virtual competitions provide the best opportunity to safeguard everyone involved.
Moreover, as we have all learned over the past twenty-plus months, dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic presents ever-changing challenges. Thus, even if we were confident today that in-person competitions were feasible, a last-minute surprise – such as a venue needing to turn us away with little or no warning – could derail an entire competition. This is especially true given the advent of the Omicron variant. Rather than risk ruining the experience for everyone who has put in so many hours of preparation, we have decided to plan for a robust, exciting virtual experience that gives us the most control in uncertain times. It would be irresponsible for us to do otherwise.

* Please note that the Mock Trial Regional Coordinators for each of the regions around the state are conducting similar evaluations and will be communicating local plans for those competitions, as are appropriate for the size and circumstances of the events in each region.
