Lucky Lab

915 SE Hawthorne Blvd
Portland, OR

FREE

There are 6 Book Club meetings per school year, usually with 5 books and one film event. Each book matches with one of the six We the People units as a way to guide connections and conversations (use of We the People in your classroom is not required). Books are picked with an eye towards feeding teachers’ brains and having adult conversation (not necessarily for use in the classroom!).

As a bonus, each meeting is worth 3 PDU hours, for a total of 18 per school year. In addition, members of the Book Club can register at a reduced price for 1 credit from Lewis & Clark Graduate School. (If you are interested in applying for graduate credit, please note that upon check out.)

Fault Lines in the Constitution, by Cynthia & Sanford Levinson

Synopsis: Many of the political issues we struggle with today have their roots in the US Constitution. Husband-and-wife team Cynthia and Sanford Levinson take readers back to the creation of this historic document and discuss how contemporary problems were first introduced—then they offer possible solutions. Think Electoral College, gerrymandering, even the Senate. Many of us take these features in our system for granted. But they came about through haggling in an overheated room in 1787, and we’re still experiencing the ramifications.
