Celebrating Oregon, Remembering Parkland

February 14, 2019

On the same day we here at Civics Learning Project celebrate Oregon’s 160th Birthday, we also remember the tragic events last year at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Oregon’s history as a state gives us a glimpse into how a community and region can change and grow, become more accepting and renew its belief in the power of its people. We invite you to celebrate Oregon this year with a special nod to the Oregonians who continue to advance democracy and access to equality for everyone.

Meanwhile, we offer these resources to provide you support and information as you and your students face the one-year anniversary of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We believe it is essential to continue our conversations with each other, even when the topics are difficult and controversial. We encourage civil discourse, focusing on shared perspective while understanding different views, and considering together ways we can build our communities with empathy and a desire to civically engage with each other.

Please check our website for other resources or contact us at any time for support in building community with your students, especially in difficult times.
