Celebrating the Life of Susie Marcus

Please join us in celebrating the amazing life and work of Susie Marcus

Susie Marcus (October 23, 1936 – December 4, 2019) was driven by a passion for learning viewed through a lens of equality, respect, and justice. She was known for her boundless energy, quick wit, and desire to make the world better for everyone. These attributes informed her life’s work and made her a key partner in the inception, growth, and success of Civics Learning Project.

Building on her already impressive career in education, Susie was an early educator member of the Oregon Law-Related Education Project (OLREP), joining its Executive Committee and then moving to the Board of the Civics Learning Project when it was incorporated in 1983 to continue OLREP’s work. She served on our Board until 1991, but never stopped sharing her ideas, energy, and talents. Earlier this year, the Civics Learning Project Board passed this resolution in recognition of her tireless efforts.

Over the years, hundreds of students learned in her classrooms. Hundreds of teachers benefitted from her mentorship and the programs she helped create and guide, reaching thousands more students.

Susie described her view of civic education in a 2018 interview as “all about helping kids look at issues with an eye to equality and respect.”

We invite you to join us in celebrating Susie by making a donation to Civics Learning Project today.
